This is a Sponsored post written by me on behalf of CryoCell International. All opinions are 100% mine.

When I was pregnant with my son, I was faced with so many important decisions as any expecting mom would face before her baby is born. From choosing the baby’s name, clothes and baby furniture to the preferences over breastfeeding vs. formula feeding. On my third semester, I found myself so hooked up on the information about the idea of umbilical cord blood banking. The idea is normally introduced to pregnant mothers before 34th week of pregnancy.

Umbilical Cord Blood (UCB) banking is not too popular in many countries. In the United States, it was introduced in response to the potential transplants in treating diseases of the blood, metabolic, and other inherited immune diseases. It is believed that cord blood contain stem cells that has unique advantages over traditional bone marrow transplantation, especially in children, and can be life-saving in cases where a suitable bone-marrow donor cannot be found. It is also believed that cord blood stem cells can also be used for siblings and other members of the family who have a matching tissue type. Siblings have a higher chance of compatibility, and the cord blood may even be a match for parents and grandparents. The process are done by collecting the blood from the umbilical cord after it was clamped, then placed in a collection bag, and transported to the facility for testing, and then cryopreserved.

There is a cost preserving our baby’s cord blood. It is sometimes the issue that adverse our decisions. Public bank accept donations to be used for anyone in need. They have very strict regulations that needed to be followed to enable the donated unit to be added to the Registry. Once it is added and passed the testing process, it loses all identifying information, and families cannot retrieve the sample of their own blood. However, private bank store cord blood with a link to the donor’s identity, families can retrieve it later when needed, parents have the custody of the unit until the child is an adult.

There are so many conflicting opinions and future parents need to be fully informed so that they can make an educated decision on whether to privately or publicly bank their newborn's umbilical cord blood, or whether to forego the process entirely. Not only must personal and financial aspects be considered, but many moral and ethical elements also factor into the decision.

ASK known as Ask Jeeves in the UK, was a search engine founded in 1996 by Garrett Gruener and David Warthen in Berkeley, California. The original search engine software was implemented by Gary Chevsky from his own design. Warthen, Chevsky, Justin Grant, and others built the early AskJeeves.com website around that core engine. Three venture capital firms, Highland Capital Partners, Institutional Venture Partners, and The RODA Group were early investors. Ask.com is currently owned by InterActiveCorp under the NASDAQ symbol IACI. In late 2010, facing insurmountable competition from Google, the company abandoned its search engine roots to become a question and answer site.

FOUNDERS

Garrett Gruener is founder of Ask.com and a co-founder of Alta Partners, a venture capital firm. He was also a candidate for the 2003 California recall special election from the Democratic Party, finishing 28th in a field of 135 candidates with 2,562 votes. Gruener was one of the candidates to aggressively use the Internet to push his message, and also ran campaign ads in selected television markets. However, he was concerned about eventual winner Arnold Schwarzenegger winning and so in the last week of the campaign threw his support to Cruz Bustamante, the primary Democratic candidate. Gruener received $1.07 million in contributions to his committee, but virtually all of it was from himself, meaning that each vote cost approximately $400. Gruener is a class of '76 UCSD Alumus. He lives in Berkeley with his wife, attorney Amy Slater, and their daughter, Dakota Gruener. Garrett Gruener is an accomplished pilot.

David Warthen, born on December 10, 1957 was one of the founders of Ask.com, an internet search engine. In 2004, Warthen joined the streaming video technology company GlobalStreams, where he served as CTO. In 2004 he founded Eye Games, a webcam-based children's video game company. He currently serves on the board of directors for search technology site Kozoru, as well as is the CTO of InfoSearchMedia. David is a UCSD Alumnus of the computer science and biology departments, and is currently enrolled in the Ph.D. program at the UC Berkeley School of Information. In April 2004, he married Cristina Schultz, a fitness model, alleged former escort, and a Stanford Law School graduate. The two filed for divorce in January 2009.

There are a number of good things about changing career or job. You are finally free from the stressful situation whether it’s about your boss or the job itself. But there are benefits that sometimes we could lose from this transition. One of that is the employer-sponsored healthcare insurance. The group insurance tied up to employer is partly subsidized that’s why we don’t feel the cost considering it’s a complete coverage—medical, dental, vision. And most of the medical plan has maternity coverage. Some companies have group coverage for short term & long term disability insurance.

When my husband and I were both in job transition, shopping for individual plan wasn’t that easy. It took us a while to find the best discount medical insurance policies available. There are best health insurance quotes available on the internet with lower health premiums to choose from. The fact that we want to keep our doctor aligned within that network of insurance makes it harder to look at the beginning. And there are few things to consider too. First, is the plan type--will it be PPO, EPO, HMO, or the tax-deductible Health Savings Account? From our experience, the PPO type will give us more flexibility to access our healthcare needs. We can go to any doctor within or outside of the carrier’s network without any referral. Then, there is the deductible, co-pay, and out-of-pocket expenses. In a PPO plan, the higher the deductible, the higher the premium. And maternity coverage even raises it to the roof. There are plans with co-pay that you’ll be responsible for on the first 3 visits, then the rest are free and vice versa (first three visits are free and you’ll pay for the rest). Gladly, we found an affordable plan that gives us a lower threshold amount on deductible before the plan kicks in, which is good considering it is an individual plan.

The internet is an informative hub to browse all the healthcare needs —the medical plan type, coverage, price, and different insurance-- short term and long term, from the basic to the most comprehensive plan for everyone. But one needs to exercise caution sending out information even if it’s just a quote. Make sure that the site you are on is legitimate and secure. You will be giving out your SSN and other relevant information about you and your family.

One clichĂ© I remember about health is “Prevention is better than cure!”. And every health provider and insurance carrier is encouraging individuals to in sync their lifestyle to promote a better health. It is in fact our responsibility as a healthcare consumer.

"WHAT'S A CLOTHES SWAP?"

This is a totally FREE event, with NO obligation to bring anything or take anything. It's called a "swap"
because so many people bring clothes they no longer need, and take what they DO want.

HERE'S HOW IT WORKS:

At home, sort and fold CLEAN clothes (clothes you wouldn't mind putting on your family to go out in public) by size into
boxes or bags. THEN, when you get to the swap, sort the clothes by size onto marked tables. Next comes the fun part.
Go to the tables with the size clothes you are looking for, and take what you need. Free of charge. No strings attached.
The organization will provide the bags for that day. One bag per family! This is the only way to keep the swap fair.

Some families are looking to clean out the clothes they no longer use, and they bring boxes of clothes in, sometimes leaving with just one or two "special" things. Other families are really in need of clothes, and come with little or nothing, but leave with a bag of clothes. Others bring what they took last season, for another family to take this time, and bring home another season's worth themselves to start the process again.

THIS IS FOR INDIVIDUALS ONLY ... NO charities, shelters, or resale.

HOW CAN YOU PARTICIPATE?

Look for clothes you might like to bring. Wash, fold, and sort them by size. Then call all your friends and family and ask them to do the same ... and come alone or as a group to the swap! Clothes swapping are even more fun when you can share your great finds with friends.

WHAT SIZES?

All sizes of baby, kids, and adult clothing (including coats, shoes, and accessories). VERY lightly stained clothes are OK as some people don't mind these for work or play, or are talented at removing stains. However, all clothing MUST BE CLEAN, NO TEARS. Fabric and baby accessories are welcome.

WHEN IS DROP OFF?

Anyone dropping off clothing the day before the swap will receive a ticket to gain first access to the swap, between 10-11AM.
Tuesday, February 15, 2011 from 2:00 p.m. until 7:00 p.m. You can also call to make other arrangements for drop-offs prior to the swap

PLEASE NOTE: For safety reasons. All children must be supervised.

Time in power: 1981 to 2011
Mubarak was appointed Vice President of Egypt in 1975, and assumed the presidency on 14 October 1981, following the assassination of President Anwar El Sadat. The length of his presidency made him Egypt's longest-serving ruler since Muhammad Ali Pasha. Before he entered politics, Mubarak was a career officer in the Egyptian Air Force, serving as its commander from 1972 to 1975. During demonstrations beginning on 25 January 2011, protesters called for his resignation as president of Egypt. On 1 February 2011, Mubarak announced that he would not seek another term in the 2011 Egyptian presidential election. On 11 February, Vice President Omar Suleiman announced that Mubarak had resigned as president and transferred authority to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces following 18 days of protests challenging his 30 year rule.

Zine el Abidine Ben Ali
Country: Tunisia
Time in power: 1987-2011

Ben Ali was appointed to lead the tiny nation of Tunisia after another leader was declared unfit to fulfill his presidential duties. Under Ben Ali’s leadership, Tunisia had several controversies, including the high-profile arrest of a journalist and riots over unemployment that led to his ouster. The small country’s uprising is said to have sparked Egyptians to take a stand for their rights.

Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi
Country: Iran
Time in power: 1941-1979

Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi’s ouster was led by the Iranian Revolution. His reign was often criticized for his relationship with the United States (which president allowed him to get surgical treatment in the US?) and economic shortages. The overthrow allowed an infamous dictator to return to Iran after years in exile.

Saddam Hussein
Country: Iraq
Time in power: 1979-2003

Hussein served as president during several crises, including the Iran-Iraq war and the Persian Gulf War. His reign came to an end 2003 after George W. Prime Minister Mohammad Mossadegh
Country: Iran
Time in power: 1951-53

Mossadegh was overthrown in a rift with Britain. His biggest claim to fame was the nationalization of the Iranian oil industry. A dispute over oil led to protests in 1952 and heightened tensions with Britain. It also fueled other fears.

Jacobo Arbenz Guzman
Country: Guatemala
Time in power: 1951-54

Arbenz was overthrown in the 1954 Guatemalan coup d’etat, which was organized by the CIA as fears of Communism heightened. Arbenz ultimately resigned and the CIA launched another operation to get proof that Guatemala was a rising Soviet state.

Czar Nicholas II
Country: Russia
Time in power: 1894-1917

Prime Minister Benito Mussolini
Country: Italy
Time in power: 1922-43

Mussolini is known as one of the fathers of fascism. His official title was not modest. He often had a contentious relationship with another dictator, but later joined forces against Britain and France in World War II. Ironically, it was his former colleagues who overthrew him.

Prime Minister Ion Antonescu
Country: Romania
Time in power: 1940-44

Antonescu created a fascist dictatorship, which also supported the Axis Powers. While he won support for domestic reforms, he was known as the mastermind behind a brutal massacre. He was overthrown in 1944 and later executed for war crimes.

President Idi Amin
Country: Uganda
Time in power: 1971-79

Amin was known as one of the most brutal dictators that Africa has ever seen. The number of people killed under his rule ranges from 100,000 to 500,000. The arrogant leader dubbed himself this royal nickname (a movie about his life used that title). On April 11, 1979, he fled the Ugandan capital as liberation forces moved in. He died in 2003 in Saudi Arabia.

President Slobodan Milosevic
Country: Yugoslavia
Time in power: 1997-2000

Milosevic, who earned this dubious honor, resigned after demonstrators protested the 2000 presidential election. Shortly after his resignation, he was arrested for embezzlement and later ordered to stand trial for war crimes. The trial ended without a verdict.

Joseph "Erap" Estrada
Country: Philippines
Time in power: 1998 - 2001

Estrada was the only president to have resigned from office and was the first person in the Post-EDSA era to be elected both to the presidency and vice-presidency. Estrada was elected President in 1998 with a wide margin of votes separating him from the other challengers, and was sworn into the presidency on June 30, 1998. In 2000 he declared an "all-out-war" against the Moro Islamic Liberation Front and captured its headquarters and other camps. However, allegations of corruption spawned an impeachment trial in the Senate, and in 2001 Estrada was ousted from a power grab after former Chief Justice Hilario Davide, Jr. allowed the prosecution to walk out of the impeachment court when the Senator Judges voted no in the opening of the second envelope which is not part of the impeachment complaint. In 2007, he was sentenced by the special division of the Sandiganbayan to reclusion perpetua for plunder.

As a first time mom, baby carriers have given me the confidence to carry my baby in a convenient way. On the first few weeks of his life, my baby needs to be held for security and comfort. More than just a way to transport him, baby carrier, baby backpacks or sling provides a gentle transition because he needs to adapt to the new environment. Being held in a carrier or sling will give him an experience of eye-to-eye contact critical for healthy bonding. Soothed by a constant gentle motion while on the carrier, he also receives a steady stream of sensory stimuli that advances his neurological development. Wearing my baby in a sling or carrier has improved our cues together. With him held close, I can easily hear his stomach growl, feel him pass a bowel movement, or feel his body relax as he gets sleepy. This minimizes guesswork on my part, giving myself more time to comfort, feed, or change him before he resorts to crying. And more freedom for me to do anything while giving him what he need. A carrier also helps my husband bond with our baby. Fathers can form a similar bond by habitually carrying the child from a very early age in a sling or carrier. In a short period of time, the baby could begin to associate a father's smell, the sound of his voice, and the feel of his skin with protection and love.

But how do we get to choose the right baby carrier? When I decided to get one for my child, it was the time when I knew he’s ready to be carried in another form aside from my hand and his car seat. I concluded that it’s not just about me but more about him –his safety and convenience. And when I say safety, this specifically refers to the physical structure of his immature body. As I’m realizing the benefits of "wearing" my baby while I perform my daily activities, I was cautious not to compromise the integrity of my child's spine through the use of improper carriers. There is a condition of Spondylolisthesis that every parent needs to be aware of as a result of excessive stress in the low back, such as a baby's spine might experience in certain carriers. It is relatively uncommon, but when aggravated is extremely painful.

Ergonomics was my main goal in choosing the right brand. It should conform to the contour of my body as well as my baby’s. It took me a little while because while I found something that’s comfortable for me, my baby looked like a little ‘joey-in-the pouch’. No doubt it’s secure but it doesn’t give him the pleasure of ‘exploring’ while we cruise. And of course, there’s also the issue about the leg hole—will his legs fit in there considering the double layers of clothing and buntings especially on winter? What I found to be ideal was the baby carrier sling. There are many variations and dizzying arrays of this type in the market today. And a few notes that I consider in choosing the type of carrier are; first, before my child can hold his head on his own, the carrier should support his neck. A sling cradles my son just like my arms would, unlike vertical carriers which can actually allow a whiplash type injury. Second, the carrier should not place my child’s spine in a weight bearing position too early. He should be horizontal or inclined, with the spine supported along its length.

Baby carriers also gave me different point of view of what babies are really like. Sometimes I envisioned babies as lying quietly in a crib, gazing passively at dangling mobiles and picked up and carried only to be fed and played with and then put down. I may think that "up" periods are just dutiful intervals to quiet him long enough to put him down again. Baby wearing reverses this view!

The choice of infant carriers is a small thing when compared to all the other concerns that faces parents, but it is a decision that can have lifelong effects. By choosing the best baby carrier, you may be preventing a lifetime of backaches and other spinal stresses!
